Biological aging research reveals sudden shifts in skin and health

Recent research suggests that biological aging does not always occur as a slow, linear process. A study led by Stanford researchers and published in ‘Nature Aging’ indicates that many biological markers, including those related to metabolism, immune function, and skin health, undergo significant shifts in waves, particularly around the mid-40s and early 60s.

While these shifts can make skin appear to age suddenly, dermatologists note that dryness, or xerosis, can exacerbate the visibility of aging. Dry skin lacks sufficient water and protective lipids, which compromises the skin barrier and makes fine lines, rough texture, and crepe-y skin more pronounced. Factors contributing to skin dryness include genetics, natural aging, environmental conditions like low humidity, and certain skincare habits such as over-cleansing or using harsh products.
