Biological factors behind the afternoon energy slump
The common phenomenon of the ‘afternoon energy dip’ or ‘3 p.m. slump’ is driven by a convergence of several biological factors rather than just food consumption.
One primary driver is sleep pressure, caused by the gradual accumulation of adenosine—an organic compound that regulates sleep and wakefulness—in the brain from the moment of waking. While the body's circadian rhythm provides alertness signals during the morning to counteract this pressure, the rhythm naturally shifts toward a higher propensity for sleep in the early afternoon.
Lunch can further exacerbate this feeling. The process of eating alters signaling between the gut, metabolism, and the brain through stomach distension, nutrient intake, and intestinal hormones. The size and composition of a meal can influence the intensity of post-meal drowsiness.
