Biological factors complicate obesity and weight loss maintenance

Obesity and the difficulty of maintaining weight loss are often driven by biological and neurological factors rather than a simple lack of willpower. In the Czech Republic, data from the National Institute of Public Health indicates that over one-third of women (36%) and nearly half of men (49%) struggle with overweight, while obesity affects 21% of men and 18% of women.

Biological mechanisms such as leptin resistance and epigenetic changes in fat cells can sabotage weight loss efforts. When weight is lost rapidly, the body may respond by lowering energy expenditure and increasing hunger signals to conserve energy. Research involving participants from 'The Biggest Loser' showed that metabolism can remain suppressed for years following extreme weight loss. Furthermore, while fat cells shrink during weight loss, they do not disappear, and cellular changes may persist, making weight regain a common physiological response.
