Shark biology reveals advanced intelligence and diverse survival traits

Sharks possess remarkable evolutionary traits that have allowed them to survive five major mass extinction events, including the Permian-Triassic extinction. Beyond their resilience, research highlights unexpected cognitive and social abilities.

Studies conducted at Macquarie University indicate that Port Jackson sharks show a preference for jazz music over classical music when conditioned with food rewards. Furthermore, certain species, such as grey bamboo sharks, demonstrate basic mathematical abilities by distinguishing between different numerical quantities and remembering geometric patterns for up to a year.

Reproductive strategies among sharks are highly diverse. While some species lay eggs, others, like bullhead and hammerhead sharks, give birth to live young nourished via an umbilical cord. In sand tiger sharks, a phenomenon known as intrauterine cannibalism occurs, where the strongest embryo survives by consuming its siblings in the womb. Additionally, some species like the grey reef shark exhibit social behaviors, maintaining stable group relationships for several years.
