Biological mechanisms and health benefits of sleep

Human sleep is driven by two primary biological mechanisms: sleep pressure and the circadian rhythm. Sleep pressure is caused by the accumulation of adenosine, a byproduct of brain activity that increases throughout the day. Caffeine temporarily masks this sensation by blocking adenosine receptors, though it does not reduce the actual buildup of the substance.

The second mechanism is the circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, which is regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the brain. This rhythm controls the release of melatonin, a hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep. Light exposure, particularly from smartphones, can suppress melatonin production and disrupt this cycle.

Beyond regulating alertness, sleep serves as a critical maintenance period for the body and brain. During sleep, growth hormones facilitate tissue repair, immune function, and physical growth. The brain utilizes this time to organize memories and clear metabolic waste, such as amyloid beta proteins, which are linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
