Biological mechanisms behind exhaustion and sleep rhythm disruption

Biological mechanisms such as the 'boom-bust' or 'push-crash' cycle can lead to extreme exhaustion. This pattern occurs when individuals overexert themselves while ignoring fatigue signals, leading to a period of forced rest. This cycle is often fueled by guilt during recovery and a tendency to overcompensate by working too hard once feeling slightly better.

Physiologically, this involves flattened cortisol curves and the accumulation of adenosine. While stress hormones may temporarily mask sleepiness during periods of high activity, adenosine continues to build up, leading to a sudden crash once adrenaline subsides.

To reset a disrupted sleep rhythm, experts suggest focusing on consistent wake-up times and morning light exposure rather than simply trying to go to bed earlier. Shifting schedules gradually by 15 to 30 minutes per day is more effective than attempting large, sudden changes, which can lead to increased tension and an inability to fall asleep.
