Biological process of fat loss reveals most mass is exhaled

Researchers from the University of Birmingham have clarified the biological process of how body fat is eliminated during weight loss. When a caloric deficit occurs, the body initiates lipolysis, breaking down stored triglycerides into fatty acids to meet energy demands.

Contrary to common belief that fat is primarily lost through sweat, the metabolic breakdown of these fats occurs within the mitochondria through beta-oxidation. This process produces carbon dioxide and water as end products. Scientific estimates indicate that approximately 84 percent of lost fat is converted into carbon dioxide and expelled through the lungs during exhalation, while the remaining 16 percent is converted into water and leaves the body via urine, sweat, and other fluids.
