Biological research identifies aging as a programmed cellular remodeling process
Research suggests that aging is driven by a biological program rather than simple cumulative wear and tear. A study led by cell biologist Junyue Cao at Rockefeller University, published in the journal Science, analyzed 21 million mouse cells across various tissues and life stages. The findings indicate that aging involves coordinated stages of cellular loss and expansion, described as a remodeling of cellular society.
The study identified that while many cell subtypes remain stable, specific populations undergo selective depletion. For instance, certain adipocytes, muscle cells, and immature brain cells disappear at specific intervals. Researchers suggest that in humans, this biological remodeling process may begin before the age of 30.
Complementary research published in Nature has also identified genetic factors linked to metabolic health, such as a rare variant of the FNIP1 gene associated with protection against obesity, liver issues, and cardiovascular disease. While scientists emphasize that aging is a modifiable biological process, experts caution against over-optimistic interpretations regarding the immediate application of these findings to extend human lifespan.
