Biological rhythms and historical patterns influence sleep

Human sleep patterns are heavily influenced by biological rhythms and historical habits. Darker mornings can make waking up more difficult because the body receives delayed light signals, which are essential for transitioning from sleep to alertness. This process is regulated by the circadian rhythm and the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the brain. When natural light is scarce, the secretion of melatonin—the hormone responsible for sleep regulation—may not be inhibited as effectively, leading to persistent drowsiness.

Additionally, frequent nighttime awakenings, such as waking around 3:00 AM, may relate to a historical pattern known as “segmented sleep.” Before the advent of artificial lighting, humans often engaged in two distinct sleep periods separated by an hour of wakefulness. While modern life has shifted the norm toward continuous sleep, the natural structure of sleep cycles—alternating between light, deep, and REM stages—means that brief awakenings are common, especially during the lighter sleep phases in the early morning hours.
