Biomass role debated in future climate-neutral energy systems

Experts at the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) annual meeting in Leipzig are discussing the future role of biomass in a climate-neutral energy system. While wind and solar power will provide the bulk of renewable energy, biomass is considered system-relevant due to its ability to be stored, providing a necessary buffer during periods of low wind and sunlight.

Beyond energy supply, biomass is in high demand from the chemical industry and for sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as high-temperature industrial processes and transportation.

In a related development for biogenic resource utilization, a container plant for synthesizing green methanol was inaugurated at Stralsund University. This facility uses hydrogen produced via electrolysis and biogenic CO₂ captured from biogas plants to create methanol. This renewable fuel can be used directly in agriculture for farm machinery, representing a decentralized approach to utilizing biogenic waste products.
