Biomethane plant proposals spark environmental concerns in Castilla y León

The regional government of Castilla y León has opened a public information period regarding a proposal by Apiolae S. L. to build a biomethane and fertilizer production plant in Val de San Lorenzo, León. The project involves the valorization of non-hazardous waste and the manufacturing of fertilizers based on phosphorus, nitrogen, or potassium. Due to its scale and the nature of the chemical and electrical infrastructure involved, the project is undergoing a formal environmental impact assessment.

In a separate development, citizens in Daimiel have organized protests against a new organic waste management decree in Castilla-La Mancha. The STOP Biometano Daimiel platform claims the regulation could facilitate the establishment of large-scale biomethane plants in the region. Protesters expressed concerns that such industrial expansion could threaten local ecosystems, including the Las Tablas de Daimiel, local aquifers, and the water resources of the Alto Guadiana.
