Biomolecular condensate research links cellular clusters to neurological disorders

Researchers have developed new methods and platforms to study biomolecular condensates, which are distinct cellular compartments that can lead to disease when they become dysfunctional.

A team at the Yale School of Medicine introduced ‘CondenScreen,’ a platform designed to identify genes associated with condensate dysfunction. Their research suggests a link between pathological condensates and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as microcephaly, in addition to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The platform is also being used to screen for potential drug candidates to prevent the buildup of these clusters.

Complementing this, a novel analysis method has been developed to describe how these condensates interact with cell membranes through wetting interactions. By analyzing the three-dimensional geometry of single condensates, researchers were able to demonstrate how membrane charge and posttranslational modifications of the Alzheimer-associated protein tau affect these interactions. This high-throughput approach aims to create a systematic database to better understand the molecular mechanisms governing condensate-membrane interactions.
