BioNTech to close three German production sites after failed sale attempts

BioNTech has announced the phased closure of three major production facilities in Germany—Tübingen, Marburg, and Idar-Oberstein—after failing to find suitable buyers or investors. The decision follows a significant decline in global demand for COVID-19 vaccines, which had previously driven massive capacity expansions. The closures are expected to affect approximately 1,800 employees across these sites and a facility in Singapore.

The shutdown schedule is staggered: the Tübingen site is slated to close by the end of 2027, Marburg in early 2028, and Idar-Oberstein by the end of 2028. BioNTech has reached agreements with works councils to implement socially responsible measures, including additional severance packages for affected staff.

This restructuring is part of a broader strategic shift. The company aims to reduce its cost structure—projecting annual savings of approximately 500 million euros by 2029—to redirect resources toward its oncology pipeline. BioNTech is increasingly focusing its research and development on cancer treatments, specifically utilizing mRNA-based immunotherapies and antibody-drug conjugates.
