Guido Oelkers BioNTech CEO appointment oncology pipeline production cuts

BioNTech SE announced that Dr. Guido Oelkers will become its Chief Executive Officer, with a start date no later than 1 February 2027. Oelkers succeeds co‑founder Prof. Ugur Sahin, who will remain on the board to support the transition. Oelkers joins from Swedish Orphan Biovitrum (Sobi), where he has been CEO since 2017 and, according to BioNTech, more than quadrupled the company’s revenues while strengthening its late‑stage pipeline.

The supervisory board described Oelkers as a seasoned leader with over 30 years of experience in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. He is tasked with steering BioNTech toward a multi‑product biopharma model by 2030, emphasizing the expansion of its oncology pipeline and the development of cancer medicines. Co‑founder Prof. Özlem Türeci will also leave the board by the end of 2026 to launch a new mRNA‑focused venture with Sahin.

In parallel, BioNTech disclosed the closure of several production sites in Germany and Singapore, affecting up to 1,860 jobs. The news lifted the share price modestly in pre‑market trading.
