BioNTech cuts 2026 revenue outlook and reports €820 million Q2 loss

BioNTech announced that its second‑quarter 2026 net loss widened to €820.8 million, with revenue falling to €105.6 million – a 59.5 % drop from the same period a year earlier. The company reduced its full‑year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of €1.6‑1.9 billion, down from the previously targeted €2.0‑2.3 billion, citing a sharp decline in global demand for COVID‑19 vaccines and the loss of milestone payments.

The supervisory board named Guido Oelkers, formerly head of Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, as the new chief executive officer, to assume the role by 1 February 2027, succeeding co‑founder Ugur Sahin. Sahin and fellow co‑founder Özlem Türeci confirmed they will leave operational duties by year‑end to launch an independent mRNA‑innovation company, while BioNTech will retain a minority stake.

The firm is shifting its focus to an oncology pipeline, highlighting late‑stage candidates such as Pumitamig (BNT327) for lung and breast cancer. BioNTech retains a cash and liquid‑asset buffer of about €16.6 billion to support the transition. It also announced the planned closure of sites in Idar‑Oberstein, Marburg and Tübingen by the end of 2027 and the winding down of its Singapore operations in early 2027.
