BioNTech shares rise amid sector momentum from Moderna

BioNTech shares rose by 5.4% to close at 86.50 euros, moving above its 200-day moving average. This upward movement appears to be driven by positive sentiment in the mRNA and cancer research sector rather than specific operational catalysts from BioNTech itself.

The broader sector momentum is being fueled by competitor Moderna, which has seen significant stock growth following promising Phase 3 results for its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, Intiserman autogene, used in combination with Merck’s Keytruda.

While Moderna’s market capitalization has reached approximately 90 billion USD, BioNTech remains valued at less than 25 billion USD. Analysts note that BioNTech faces challenges, including the discontinuation of a Phase 2 colorectal cancer vaccine study and the planned departure of founders Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci by the end of 2026. However, BioNTech maintains a strong financial position with reserves of approximately 18.6 billion USD and a lower price-to-sales ratio compared to Moderna.
