BioNTech slashes 2026 revenue outlook, reports loss and names Guido Oelkers as new CEO
BioNTech reduced its 2026 worldwide revenue forecast to €1.6‑1.9 billion, down from the previously guided €2.0‑2.3 billion, citing weaker demand for COVID‑19 vaccines and delayed milestone payments. The company’s Q2 2026 revenue fell about 60 % year‑on‑year to €105.6 million, while the net loss widened to €820.8 million, compared with a €190.4 million loss a year earlier. Shares closed at €79.15, roughly 6 % below the 200‑day average, and Citigroup cut its price target to $125 while keeping a “Buy” rating.
In parallel, BioNTech announced that Guido Oelkers, current CEO of Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, will succeed co‑founder Ugur Sahin as chairman‑executive by 1 February 2027, marking the end of the founding era. The industrial union IGBCE urged BioNTech to sell rather than close its Marburg production site, pointing to alleged interest from competitor Moderna and warning against irreversible decisions while options remain unexamined. The union’s demand reflects mounting restructuring pressure as the company posted a €1.35 billion net loss in the first half of 2026.
