BioNTech targets €500 million savings and site sales to fund oncology shift

BioNTech is undertaking a radical internal transformation aimed at cutting about €500 million a year in operating costs. The plan includes the possible sale or closure of up to four German production facilities, with the savings to be reinvested in its personalized cancer‑medicine pipeline. Management led by Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci has opened confidential talks with potential buyers and investors. The US rival Moderna has signalled interest in the German sites, contingent on a more favourable policy environment in Europe.

The share price has hovered around €84.5, near its start‑of‑year level and well below the pandemic peak, reflecting market uncertainty about the restructuring. Analysts note that the cost‑discipline drive is essential for BioNTech to transition from a pandemic vaccine maker to a global oncology specialist.
