Bioparque Bubalcó receives 40 penguins from closed aquarium

More than 40 Magellanic penguins have been relocated to the Bioparque Bubalcó natural reserve in Río Negro. The birds were previously housed at the Mar del Plata Aquarium, which closed permanently in March 2025 following the bankruptcy of Plunimar S.A.

Because these specific penguins were born and raised in captivity, they require human care and cannot be released into the wild. The relocation was ordered by the judiciary to ensure their survival. Bioparque Bubalcó spent months constructing a specialized enclosure to facilitate their adaptation.

In a separate development related to the liquidation of Plunimar S.A., four lesser crested penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) have been valued at US$40,000 and put up for sale as assets during the bankruptcy proceedings.
