BioPhenolics selected for METI subsidy to develop bio-chemical production in Malaysia
BioPhenolics, a startup originating from the University of Tsukuba, has been selected for a subsidy program by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The project focuses on conducting a feasibility study for a decentralized production model to manufacture low-carbon biochemicals in Malaysia.
The initiative aims to utilize unused palm biomass residues to create high-value biochemicals using BioPhenolics’ proprietary microbial fermentation technology. The study will evaluate two primary areas: the viability of using palm-derived resources as raw materials and the business feasibility of establishing an overseas manufacturing base, including plant configuration, logistics, and regulatory requirements.
This project is part of a broader METI effort to support Japanese companies in expanding their technologies to the Global South, aiming to strengthen supply chains and promote economic cooperation while addressing decarbonization and digital transformation challenges.
