Biophilic design uses natural elements to enhance indoor spaces

Biophilic design focuses on connecting indoor environments with natural patterns, textures, and rhythms to improve how a space feels to the human body. According to Hannes Boman, head of Design at Bjelin, this approach goes beyond simply adding plants; it involves creating interiors that resonate with natural elements.

Flooring plays a critical role in this design philosophy as it serves as the physical and visual anchor of a room. Wood flooring is particularly effective in biophilic contexts because its organic patterns and subtle irregularities are instinctively recognized by the brain as natural. Unlike uniform, highly processed surfaces, wood gains depth over time through changes in light and usage, offering a sense of authenticity.
