Biotech Open Platform launches in Clermont-Ferrand to scale industrial fermentation

The Biotech Open Platform (BIOP) has officially launched in Clermont-Ferrand, France, marking a significant step for European industrial biotechnology. The facility, located within the Michelin Innovation Park, aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and large-scale industrial production, a phase where approximately 70% of biotech start-ups typically fail.

With an initial investment exceeding 20 million euros, the 5,000-square-meter complex utilizes micro-organisms such as fungi, yeast, and micro-algae as biological factories to produce molecules like proteins and enzymes. The platform features a 15-cubic-meter fermentation line and currently employs 16 people. It is designed to serve startups, R&D actors, and major industrial players.

Key partners and clients include Danone and Michelin. Danone utilizes the platform for co-development in ingredients and packaging, while Michelin aims to use bio-sourced resins to replace traditional products containing toxic molecules like formaldehyde. The platform plans to expand, with a second fermentation line expected by 2028.
