Biotrend Enerji and Uniper partner to explore Turkish biomethane exports

Biotrend Enerji, a subsidiary of Doğanlar Holding, and the German energy company Uniper have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the production and export of biomethane from Turkey to Europe.

The agreement focuses on assessing the conversion of existing waste-based biogas plants into biomethane production facilities and developing new capacity. The parties will investigate the technical and commercial feasibility of transporting the produced gas to European markets through Turkey's existing natural gas infrastructure.

Turkey's annual biomethane production potential is estimated to be as high as 50 terawatt-hours (TWh). Biotrend's current portfolio is estimated to have a production potential of approximately 1.4 TWh. Uniper CEO Michael Lewis stated that the collaboration aims to investigate the possibility of importing this resource to Germany to support its decarbonization goals. The current protocol serves as an initial phase and does not create binding investment or purchase commitments.
