Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman commemorated on 55th death anniversary

Today marks the 55th death anniversary of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman, the youngest recipient of Bangladesh’s highest military honor. During the 1971 Liberation War, the 18-year-old soldier performed a heroic feat at the Dhalai border in Moulvibazar. To neutralize a Pakistani military machine gun post that was obstructing freedom fighters, Hamidur Rahman launched a high-risk mission, using grenades and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Although he succeeded in disabling the post, allowing fighters to capture the border outpost, he lost his life in the process.

In his home district of Jhenaidah, recent tensions arose regarding a monument built in his honor. Reports indicate that a group of individuals attempted to dismantle the ‘Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman Square’ and its sculpture in Jhenaidah city earlier this year, and instances of disrespect toward the monument were noted in October. Following intervention by the district administration, the sculpture was protected, repaired, and repainted.

Commemorative programs are being organized by the Jhenaidah district and Maheshpur upazila administrations, alongside local freedom fighter associations, to honor his sacrifice.
