Bird Decline Study Shows Mixed Trends as Art Highlights Harm

A research team at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo examined how air pollution, night‑time lighting, heat and other factors affect bird populations. Their analysis confirmed that worldwide bird numbers have fallen sharply but identified pockets where some species are thriving, especially in areas with high air or light pollution. The study singled out reduced darkness and poor air quality as the two strongest negative influences, while noting that local actions such as dimming streetlights and cutting emissions can help birds.

Separately, the Garden Museum in London opened an exhibition of Cedric Morris paintings that portray birds as victims of industrialisation and pesticide use. Works such as the depiction of a dead pheasant and the stark “Landscape of Shame” illustrate the artist’s protest against environmental damage, linking historic art with contemporary concerns about bird conservation.
