Wildlife experts provide guidance on proper winter bird feeding
Experts and conservation organizations, including NABU and the LBV, are providing guidance on how to support wild birds during the autumn and winter months. While millions of people in Germany participate in bird feeding, improper methods can cause more harm than good by promoting diseases or altering natural behaviors.
One of the most critical errors identified by scientists is failing to clean bird feeders. High concentrations of birds in small spaces can lead to the accumulation of droppings and food waste, creating ideal conditions for pathogens. Other common mistakes include using incorrect food types or placing feeders in unsuitable locations.
To assist birds during the high-energy demand of October and November, garden owners are encouraged to provide natural food sources. Leaving fallen fruit, such as pears and apples, in gardens can provide essential hydration and quick energy through fruit sugars. This is particularly vital for young birds and species like blackbirds, starlings, and robins as they prepare for the cold season.
