Bird flu surveillance faces challenges amid undetected viral circulation

New research and technological developments are addressing gaps in bird flu surveillance in North America. An Arizona State University study revealed that a fast-moving strain of H5N1, known as D1.1, circulated undetected in wild birds for approximately three months before being identified in September 2024. This period of cryptic circulation highlights vulnerabilities in current disease monitoring networks. The study noted a west-to-east progression of the virus across continental flyways.

To improve detection, Alveo Technologies is seeking USDA approval for a new portable diagnostic device. The tool uses semiconductor-based sensing and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to provide results in 45 minutes directly on poultry farms. Unlike traditional PCR tests, this device avoids expensive optical components, potentially allowing for more rapid, on-site testing. This comes as the USDA reports that since February 2022, the virus has affected nearly 2,000 American poultry premises and resulted in the loss of over 185 million birds.
