Bird migration begins across North America as autumn approaches

As summer transitions to autumn, various bird species across North America are preparing for seasonal migration. In Canada’s boreal forests alone, an estimated five billion birds depart each fall, heading toward warmer climates in South and Central America.

Migratory species undergo significant physiological changes, including hyperphagia, where they consume large amounts of food to build fat reserves necessary for their journeys. For hummingbirds, this preparation is critical as they may face grueling non-stop flights, including stretches across open water. To support these travelers, experts recommend maintaining clean backyard feeders to provide high-energy nectar without the risk of mold or fermentation.

Migration patterns vary by species and timing. Songbirds like warblers, vireos, and orioles typically move through regions by mid-September, followed by thrushes and sparrows later in the season. Waterbirds and hummingbirds also follow specific migratory waves, with different sexes and age groups departing at staggered intervals.
