Bird migration intensifies across European habitats

Autumn bird migration is currently underway across Europe, with significant activity observed in key habitats such as Greifensee in Switzerland and Hortobágy in Hungary.

At Greifensee, starlings are utilizing reed belts for shelter and sleeping. These birds often form large, synchronized flocks that move together to protect against predators. The region serves as a vital refuge for both short-distance migrants, such as starlings and robins, and long-distance migrants like night herons and various waders.

In Hungary, the Hortobágy National Park has seen a massive influx of cranes. By late September, more than 50,000 cranes had arrived at the site, a significant increase from 10,000 recorded in early September. Experts expect the population to peak in mid-October, potentially reaching 150,000 birds. The Hortobágy area is one of Europe's most important resting sites, with 95 percent of the migratory population passing through Hungary utilizing these wetlands.
