Bird migration peaks across Germany as nature enthusiasts gather

The autumn bird migration is currently reaching its peak across Germany, prompting nature enthusiasts to participate in seasonal birdwatching activities. The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) has declared a nationwide nature experience titled ‘Birdwatch,’ inviting people to help count and identify various species.

In Germany, approximately half of the 300 breeding bird species are migratory. Each year, over 200 million birds depart their breeding grounds to winter in warmer regions such as Southern Europe or Africa. Species like cranes are currently gathering in large groups, while others, such as nightingales and swifts, have already begun their journey.

In coastal regions, the Wadden Sea serves as a critical hub on the East Atlantic Flyway. Millions of birds, including geese, ducks, and various waders, use this protected World Natural Heritage site to rest and feed. According to the WWF, the area is of international importance, as it supports significant populations of species like the dark-bellied Brent goose and various sandpipers during their long-distance travels.
