Bird mortality reported in Argentina and Spain

Local suspicions suggest the birds may have been targeted by slingshots or compressed air weapons, a recurring issue in the area that has previously affected toucans.

In Arguedas, Spain, a severe storm involving heavy rain and hail resulted in the deaths of approximately 3,794 birds, primarily sparrows, according to the Colectivo Gardacho. The storm struck at night while the birds were in their nests. Volunteers reported that the scale of the loss is unprecedented in their experience, attributing the extreme weather event to the broader context of climate change. A similar storm in Tarragona, Spain, also caused the deaths of approximately one hundred pigeons.
