Birdsong boosts well-being while traffic noise undermines benefits

Research from the University of Surrey indicates that birdsong significantly enhances psychological well-being, but these restorative benefits are undermined by traffic noise in urban environments.

In studies involving over 1,500 participants, researchers tested various combinations of natural and urban soundscapes. Participants exposed to restored forests with birdsong reported the lowest stress levels and highest emotional well-being. Conversely, urban settings characterized by traffic noise resulted in the highest stress levels and the least emotional resilience.

Dr. Eleanor Ratcliffe noted that the calming effects of birdsong remained consistent regardless of acoustic complexity. Dr. Melissa Marselle suggested that understanding these soundscapes could help identify tranquil outdoor spaces for those feeling overwhelmed. To mitigate the negative impact of noise, researchers proposed potential interventions such as reducing speed limits near parks.
