Birdwatchers hunt flag‑colored gaturamo‑bandeira in Apucarana, Brazil

A group of birdwatchers from the nearby cities of Londrina and Apucarana gathered on Sunday, 26 July 2026, for a walking expedition in Parque da Raposa. Their aim was to locate and document the gaturamo‑bandeira, a small native bird whose plumage mirrors the colours of the Brazilian flag.

The gaturamo‑bandeira measures about 10 cm and weighs roughly 13 g. Males display a green head, throat and neck, a blue‑tinged back and wings, and a bright yellow belly, while females have a greener belly and fully green wings with a distinctive blue triangular spot on the nape. The observers hoped the walk – locally known as “passarinhar” – would add sightings to the species’ local record.
