Birdwatching initiatives launched in Botucatu and Apucarana

Various initiatives in Brazil are promoting birdwatching to encourage biodiversity appreciation and citizen science. In Botucatu, the municipal tourism department, in partnership with SAVE Brasil, has launched the ‘Observa Botucatu’ campaign. The program aims to teach residents and visitors how to observe birds in urban areas like parks and gardens without needing specialized equipment. The initiative also emphasizes citizen science, where participants share sightings on collaborative platforms to assist in fauna conservation research. Free identification workshops are planned for the second half of the year.

In Apucarana, the ‘Vem Passarinhar Paraná’ project is hosting an event at Parque Lago Jaboti. Originally created by the Instituto Butantan Bird Observatory, this movement is being developed in Paraná as a research and extension project by the State University of Maringá (UEM). The event includes guided trails, species identification through song, and discussions to facilitate knowledge exchange between experienced observers and beginners. These activities aim to highlight the importance of urban green spaces for wildlife conservation and community well-being.
