Birgi Airport faces scrutiny over passenger disruptions

The Vincenzo Florio Airport in Trapani-Birgi is facing scrutiny following passenger disruptions caused by flight diversions from Catania Airport, which has been closed due to Etna-related emergencies.

CNA Trapani has denounced the situation, reporting that passengers faced long waits, insufficient information, and difficulties securing bus connections. The association criticized the lack of a structured assistance system for sudden influxes of travelers and highlighted regional infrastructure deficiencies, noting that some rail journeys can take over 13 hours. CNA is calling on the Sicilian Region to provide extraordinary replacement services during such emergencies.

In response, Airgest, the airport operator, defended its actions, stating that legal responsibility for transferring passengers to their original destinations lies with the airlines, not the airport manager. Airgest clarified that while they are not legally obligated to provide assistance when passengers voluntarily accept a new destination, they have coordinated with regional departments to enhance ground connections toward Palermo to facilitate travel via rail and road.
