BIRMEX faces calls for transparency over Megafarmacia del Bienestar

Legislators from the National Action Party (PAN), along with representatives from the PRD and deputy Luz Itzel Mendo González, have proposed a formal agreement requiring Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México (BIRMEX) to provide transparent and verifiable data regarding the operation of the Megafarmacia del Bienestar.

The proposal demands that BIRMEX publish specific metrics, including the number of requests received, addressed, rejected, or pending, as well as response times and the types of medicines and supplies distributed. It also calls for public reports on the resources allocated for the acquisition, operation, and maintenance of the facility, and its actual impact on addressing medicine shortages in national health institutions.

Financial figures cited in the proposal indicate that the total project cost for 2026 has risen to approximately 17.6 billion pesos, up from an initial investment originally announced at around 2.7 billion pesos, which later reached approximately 3.9 billion pesos.
