Birmex redistributes 168 million medical supplies after distribution errors

The Mexican state-owned company Birmex has acknowledged significant distribution failures within its supply chain, necessitating the redistribution of 168 million units of medicines, healing materials, and health supplies (MMCIS).

According to the 2025-2026 Progress and Results report, these products were sent to incorrect locations due to logistical complexities in the ‘last mile’ and general supply chain issues. To address the imbalance, Birmex coordinated the transfer of supplies between the warehouses of IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar to prevent overconcentration in some facilities while supplying those facing shortages.

The report also highlighted difficulties in procurement, noting that some medical supplies could not be awarded because no providers with the necessary technical capacity were found. Additionally, some contracted suppliers struggled to deliver goods on time and in the correct manner.
