Birmingham Announces $45 Million Plan to Expand Career Training and Upgrade Schools

The City of Birmingham proposes a $45 million investment to prepare students for high‑demand careers and modernize school facilities. The package includes $40 million to build the Future Ready Career and Innovation Center on the former Arthur School site, $4.1 million to renovate elementary and middle‑school basketball courts, $1 million for a Junior Achievement Economic Education Center, and $60,000 to improve a preschool playground.

Financing would come from a portion of Jefferson County ad valorem tax revenues dedicated to public‑school capital projects, using a pay‑as‑you‑go approach that would not affect the general fund. The proposal was presented by Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan and will be considered by the full Birmingham City Council.
