Birmingham City Council Approves Birmingham Oasis Daytime Homelessness Center

Mayor Randall Woodfin recommended and the Birmingham City Council approved the creation of Birmingham Oasis, a dedicated daytime respite center for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The council signed a three‑year ground lease for roughly 0.21 acres at 600 3rd Avenue North at a total cost of $50,000, and a $600,000 contract with nonprofit Urban Alchemy to operate the site through the city’s Opioid Abatement Program for an initial 12‑month term.

Scheduled to open in late September, Birmingham Oasis will operate 12–14 hours each day, offering housing navigation, mental‑health and substance‑use treatment referrals, peer support, life‑skills coaching, employment assistance, meals, restrooms, personal lockers and other services to help unhoused residents transition to stable housing.
