Birmingham City Council votes to review investments linked to Israel
Birmingham City Council has passed a resolution to conduct a six month review of financial holdings and banking relationships connected to Israel. The motion, introduced by councillors Jamil Khan and Nosheen Khalid, mandates an examination of the West Midlands Pension Fund and the council’s procurement and commercial dealings to determine if public money is linked to companies allegedly involved in breaches of international law.
The vote, which passed 54 to 19, included amendments condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza. During the proceedings, some members displayed images of casualties in Gaza and chanted slogans supporting Palestine.
Legal organizations, including UK Lawyers for Israel, have criticized the proposal. They warned that the motion could be unlawful, noting that British statutes and government guidelines generally prohibit using public procurement or pension funds to pursue political boycotts. Critics emphasized that the Pension Fund is legally obligated to act in the financial interest of its beneficiaries rather than for political purposes, and expressed concerns that the move could increase hostility toward Jewish residents.
