Birmingham City to build new stadium using bricks from former hospital

Birmingham City Football Club is set to incorporate one million reclaimed bricks from the former City Hospital into its new stadium project, known as ‘Powerhouse’. The materials, which were produced at the Adderley Park Brickworks on the site where the stadium will stand, will be restored by specialists to construct twelve chimney-style towers.

The project serves as a tribute to the city’s industrial heritage and is part of a larger urban regeneration effort to create a ‘Sports Quarter’. The new arena, estimated to cost £3 billion, will have a capacity of 62,000 spectators and is expected to be completed by 2030.

The redevelopment will also include a training center, a women’s football dedicated sports plaza, a private train station, and event spaces. The City Hospital, which operated for over 130 years before closing in 2024, originally utilized bricks from the very location where the new stadium is being built.
