Birmingham District 8 officials announce neighborhood investment plans

Birmingham City Councilwoman Sonja Q. Smith and Alabama Representative Travis Hendrix hosted a town hall meeting for approximately 90 District 8 residents at Sardis Baptist Church. The meeting focused on upcoming neighborhood investments and community development.

A key announcement included a new $100,000 capital improvement project. Under this initiative, residents can apply for matching funds of up to $25,000 for projects intended to improve their specific neighborhoods. Applications for these funds are scheduled to launch in the fall, with award announcements expected in Spring 2027.

Councilwoman Smith also detailed previous spending in 2026, which included $14,250 for neighborhood associations and $43,600 for youth partnerships. Future financial commitments include $10,000 in microgrants, $20,000 for small businesses, $20,000 for youth causes, and $25,000 for the Block in Bloom festival collaboration. Representatives from the Birmingham Police Department’s West Precinct and various city departments were present to address resident concerns.
