Birmingham early childhood program gains national recognition

The Birmingham Talks early childhood development program, managed by the organization Small Magic, has been featured in a new national book titled ‘Do What Works: Smarter Government, Better Results’. The collection highlights leaders who utilize data-driven strategies to improve public outcomes.

Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin contributed an essay to the book titled ‘Good Ideas Travel’, detailing the development of Birmingham Talks and its expansion into Small Magic. The initiative focuses on maximizing school readiness for young children. The program's success was discussed during a panel hosted by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and several local service clubs, featuring representatives from Small Magic and the national nonprofit Results for America.

In a separate local educational initiative, the Birmingham-based nonprofit Books That Build Skills has introduced ‘Story Quest’ at the North Shelby Library. This program provides educational kits that use storytelling to teach children STEM concepts, career opportunities, and practical life skills, such as time management and project planning.
