Birmingham European Championships attract Luxembourg trio and elite high‑jump field
Luxembourg will be represented by a three‑person team at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham from 10‑16 August. Sprinter Patrizia van van der Weken will open the competition in the 100 m, steeple‑runner Ruben Querinjean will contest the 3 000 m steeplechase, and middle‑distance runner Vera Bertemes‑Hoffmann will double in the 1 500 m and 5 000 m events.
Ahead of the championships, a high‑jump meeting is being held in Schlanders on 31 July, drawing an international field that includes Turkey’s Ersu Sasma, Italy’s Matteo Oliveri, Italy’s Elisa Molinarolo and several other contenders such as US athlete Olen Tray Oates. The meeting noted the late withdrawal of Dutch record‑holder Menno Vloon, making Sasma the new favorite. Former meeting record‑holder Juliana De Menis Campos will also return to defend her title.
Both events serve as preparation for athletes targeting medals at the Birmingham championships, highlighting the breadth of talent converging on the European stage.
