Birmingham plans city-wide 20mph speed limit rollout

Birmingham City Council has unveiled a transport plan aiming to make the city England’s first 20mph city. Under the proposed Local Plan, a 20mph speed limit would become the standard for B-roads, C-roads, and unclassified local roads, though A-roads would be excluded.

The initiative seeks to transform the city’s transport system by 2031, prioritizing walking, cycling, and active travel over car usage. The council stated that the goal is to ensure cars no longer ‘dominate’ street life around homes, schools, and local centers, which they believe will improve air quality and reconnect communities.

The proposal has met opposition from critics, including Reform UK, who have labeled the move as an ‘anti-motorist’ policy. Opponents argue that the restrictions will increase congestion and make navigating the city more difficult for drivers, marking a significant shift for a city historically central to the British motor industry.
