Birmingham to host commemoration of 63rd Civil Rights anniversary

Community leaders in Birmingham are organizing a special commemorative gathering to mark the 63rd anniversary of the city’s defining year in the American Civil Rights Movement. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, starting at 11 a.m. in the Birmingham Civil Rights District.

Participants include Birmingham City Schools alumni born in 1963. The activities will take place at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Kelly Ingram Park, a national historic site known for pivotal nonviolent demonstrations. The gathering, which includes a ‘Longest Table of Joy,’ aims to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for justice and to reflect on the legacy that led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Organizer Bettina Byrd-Giles stated that the event provides an opportunity to honor past sacrifices while recommitting to the work of building a more just and equitable society. Attendees are encouraged to wear yellow to symbolize resilience, reclamation, and joy.
