Birmingham unveils five-year plan to reduce gun violence

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and the Birmingham Office of Community Safety Initiatives have announced the Birmingham Violence Reduction Strategic Plan. The five-year initiative, which runs through July 31, 2031, aims to reduce homicides and nonfatal shootings by 10 percent annually.

The plan is built upon four primary pillars: supporting safety and wellness, engaging and empowering the community, strengthening policy and oversight, and increasing youth safety. Rather than focusing solely on policing, the strategy emphasizes a coordinated effort between law enforcement, community organizations, businesses, and residents to address crime before it occurs.

Key components of the strategy include working with at-risk individuals through existing programs such as the Restore program and the Offender Alumni Association. The initiative seeks to establish a “culture of safety” by utilizing data-driven strategies and investing in community empowerment to disrupt cycles of violence.
