BIRN BiH launches memorialisation project to document unmarked war sites

The Balkan Investigative Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIRN BiH), together with the civil‑society organization Pro Peace, has opened a call for experts to support the project “Virtualna sjećanja: Borba protiv institucionalnog otpora inkluzivnoj memorijalizaciji.” The initiative runs from 1 February 2024 to 31 July 2026 and aims to strengthen institutional accountability and public participation in creating a safe environment for civil society and independent media.

Key activities include creating a digital map of locations of detention, torture and killings that lack official memorials, providing verified information to counter revisionist narratives, and promoting inclusive remembrance that reflects all victims regardless of ethnicity or religion. The project seeks to document facts, fight misinformation about wartime events, and foster a shared, fact‑based memory as a foundation for lasting peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
