Bisceglie Council approves motion to honor former Mayor Franco Napoletano
The Bisceglie City Council has unanimously approved a motion to begin the process of naming a public site after the late Honorable Franco Napoletano, a former mayor of the city. The motion, presented by Democratic Party councilor Elisabetta Mastrototaro and Sinistra Italiana councilor Gianni Naglieri, suggests the Teatro Mediterraneo or another significant public location as a fitting tribute.
Napoletano, who served as mayor from 1996 to 2006, was a key promoter of the Festival dei Popoli del Mediterraneo and helped foster cultural ties between Bisceglie and the Mediterranean basin. The open-air theater is also linked to the twinning of Bisceglie and Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip, a connection established in 1999.
The approved motion also calls on the Mayor and the City Council to promote annual initiatives to honor Napoletano’s memory and his commitment to intercultural dialogue, in collaboration with schools and cultural associations. The Municipal Toponymy Commission will now evaluate various proposals for the dedication.
