Bishop Alfonso Miranda Guardiola addresses youth violence and pollution in Coahuila
Alfonso Miranda Guardiola, Bishop of the Diocese of Piedras Negras, has issued urgent calls regarding two distinct social and environmental issues in Coahuila, Mexico.
Addressing a rise in violence among youth and adolescents, the Bishop urged families and educators to reinforce positive values and monitor internet usage. He warned that excessive internet consumption can expose young people to websites, groups, and games that promote hatred and violence through dangerous challenges. He recommended that parents supervise digital devices and maintain open communication with their children to mitigate these influences.
Separately, the Bishop condemned the severe atmospheric pollution caused by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) coal-fired power plants located in Nava. While acknowledging the strategic importance of these plants for Mexico’s energy sovereignty and local employment, Miranda Guardiola emphasized that clean air is a non-negotiable right. He called for urgent technical studies, audits, and corrective measures from federal and state environmental authorities to address the dense smoke emissions affecting public health in northern Coahuila.
